Odyssey Academy Provides Personalized Instruction Because....
People. Individuals. No two are alike; in appearance, temperament, aptitude, and talents. Each person has a myriad of characteristics uniquely interwoven to make him who he is.
Within education, there are two basic methods of instruction:
- The Group System: instruction based upon the child’s age in years, used in modern conventional education. The "cookie cutter" approach.
- The Personalized System: instruction based upon the child’s current level of knowledge, or degree of understanding.
We believe that a "cookie cutter" education is not for everyone. As an educational philosophy, personalization centers on the individual student, not a class or a group. Personalization allows for customizing instructional delivery to meet each child’s needs best.
Plato was fond of saying, "The ideal education is one student with one teacher on one log."
It is understandable that those who were trained in the modern conventional classroom would have some difficulty accepting the concept of individualized learning. After all, today’s personalized learning is not generally used in spite of its traditional role.
So, while some may question the genius of personalizing, it is wise to take a moment to note its benefits and to mention a few examples. While history is replete with illustrations, consider these five individuals who benefited from personalized instruction—each having a unique impact upon their time and culture.
- Thomas Edison
- Johann Sebastian Bach
- Florence Nightingale
- Theodore Roosevelt
- Albert Einstein
These individuals were each placed into course material that corresponded to their level of academic performance. This required each instructor to evaluate the student’s achievement level and ability. The student’s strengths and weaknesses had to be addressed. As a result, these individuals were not only able to achieve but to excel.
That is our philosophy on education. We want to provide a personalized course of instruction which will meet your child's individual need.
